My Maverick is Jean Vanier.

Jean Vanier was born in 1928 in Switzerland.
In 1964, he bought a house in France where he lived with people with developmental disabilities.
He called the house “L’Arche,” a French word for “Noah’s Arc.”

My Maverick made things better

In 1969, the first L’Arche community was founded in North America.
In 1972, people who followed Jean Vanier’s ideas in Edmonton opened the first L’Arche home in Alberta.
In 1974, L’Arche Calgary was founded.
In 1991, L’Arche Lethbridge opened their first home.
These homes have helped people share their lives with others.
This also helped people with disabilities live in the community.

Jean Vanier has been given many awards.
He was awarded the Companion Order of Canada in 1986.
Jean Vanier still lives in the first L’Arche house in France.
