Winnifred Stewart

Winnifred Stewart was born in 1908.
In 1911, she moved to Edmonton.
Later she got married and had kids.
One of her kids had a disability

There were no schools for kids with disabilities.
So Winnifred started her own school.
Her school opened in 1953.
Her school is called the Winnifred Stewart School.
From 1954 to 1970, she opened 19 more schools.

Winnifred was the first woman to talk to the MLA’s in government.
This helped pass a law to have financial aid for these kids.
In 1972, the Winnifred Stewart Foundation was started.
She also helped these kids get a job after they were finished school.

In 1956 Winnifred got an award.
The award was called Edmonton’s Citizen of the Year award.
In 1972 she got another award.
The award was called the Order of Canada award.
She got many awards for her work.
Winnifred died in 1990.
